A waterfall with a concealed reservoir
Water flows over the visible rocks and returns to a reservoir beneath the finish surface. A pump recirculates it to the top. The reservoir and access points are part of the installation even though they are less visible than the waterfall. Pondless does not mean equipment-free or maintenance-free.
Choose the sound and view you want
A broad gentle spill, a short cascade and a longer stream create different effects. Describe where you will sit, which windows overlook the feature and how prominent you want the sound to be. Stone arrangement and water flow should be considered together. A reference photo can communicate a preference, but the final layout needs to fit the property.
Plan reservoir capacity, splash and access
The design should account for the water moving through the stream and waterfall as well as the concealed storage. Wind exposure, splash and the return path can affect water loss. Ask how the pump will be reached for maintenance and how topping up is handled. Do not cover service access with permanent finishes that must be dismantled for routine work.
What belongs in an installation proposal
Look for the reservoir system, liner details, pump and plumbing, stonework, excavation and finishing. Electrical work, lighting, planting, water supply and lawn or patio restoration should be included or clearly excluded. Access restrictions and moving large stones can influence both price and schedule. Compare the complete installed feature rather than a pump or kit price.
Commissioning and care
Before handover, the feature should be run and checked for the agreed flow, splash control and accessible operation. Ask for instructions on water levels, debris removal and seasonal operation for the installed equipment. Discuss the intended operating schedule and compatible controls during design. Equipment and restart instructions should match that use.
Is a pondless feature maintenance-free?
No. The reservoir, intake and pump still need attention, and debris or low water can affect performance.
Is it better than a pond?
